Carbon8’s CO₂ntainer completes its journey to Vicat’s Montalieu cement plant
Carbon8 Systems’ award-winning carbon capture and use technology, its CO₂ntainer, has completed its journey from the UK to Vicat Group’s cement plant at Montalieu, near Lyon.
When it enters full operation later this year, it will be integrated into Montalieu’s existing industrial processes to capture CO₂ directly from the plant’s flue gas emissions, which will in turn be used to convert cement bypass dust from the plant into construction aggregates.
Carbon8 Systems invented and designed the CO₂ntainer system, using the company’s patented Accelerated Carbonisation Technology solution. “Carbon Capture in a Box”, the CO₂ntainer was built by Wrights Engineering in Worksop.
Montalieu is Carbon8 Systems’ first commercial deployment and follows successful demonstration projects at cement plants in the UK and Canada.
In its first phase of operation at Montalieu, the CO₂ntainer will process and convert up to 12,000 tonnes of cement bypass dust into valuable construction aggregates that Vicat can commercially repurpose into various applications, for instance in lightweight concrete blocks.

Before leaving the UK, the CO₂ntainer stopped off at the company’s main office and laboratory at the University of Greenwich (Medway Campus).
