Carbon8 is a Circular Impact company, converting carbon and industrial residues into sustainable value streams

The hard-to-abate industries represent over 20% of global emissions according to the International Environment Agency (IEA) and are a signiﬁcant contributor to industrial residues. In the face of real climate crisis, these industries are under increasing pressure to act now.

At Carbon8, we strive to break the linear nature of current value chains and transform the product-waste process into a circular cycle.

The linear model, based on a 'take-make-use-dispose' system, is leading to emissions, residual waste, and associated expenses. This not only represents an environmental but also an economic burden.

Building the circular economy

We are a global leader in carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), specialising in carbonation and mineralisation. Through our Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT), we capture CO₂ directly from the source to treat industrial residues, thereby manufacturing products that can be reused.

Our lightweight, carbon-negative aggregates have various applications in construction and serve as a valuable, high-performance alternative to natural aggregate, thereby inherently reducing the carbon footprint of any construction project.

The CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ is the realisation of our technology as a compact, mobile, skid-based CCUS solution. It enables easy on-site implementation, minimising disruptions to production.

FOUNDATION STORY

From Lab to Industry

Carbon8 has gone from lab to prototypes. The company made the monumental advance to full-scale commercial deployment in the market over the period 2023 to 2025.

The company made its first commercial sale to the cement industry, achieved a groundbreaking technological breakthrough, and reached a historic milestone by completing and commissioning its first-of-a-kind system and sale with a client in France.

The company also patented Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) and has an exemplar plant deployed in the market, demonstrating technical, operational, and investment credibility at scale.

Development of the technology

Carbon8 began working on ACT in the 1990s. After inventing and patenting the technology, we first proved the concept in its standalone form, ultimately leading to the realisation of the technology as a containerised solution: The CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ.

To develop and scale the solution, Carbon8 has worked with proud partners and clients over the years.

1999 - 2004

A number of trials of the technology at contaminated sites including Avenue Coking Works, Halton, and the Astra Fireworks site, funded by Blue Circle cement.
2006 - 2007

Carbon8 Systems is formed in 2006, as a spin out from the University of Greenwich.
The company wins a number of awards for innovation, including Kent Environmental Business of the year in 2006, the IChemE Green Chemical Award in 2006, and the national Shell Springboard award in 2007.
2010

New company formed by Carbon8’s directors, securing our first commercial licence specifically for the use of ACT to treat Air Pollution Control (APCr) residues (a hazardous waste from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration) in the UK.
2012

Under the design leadership and management of Carbon8’s directors, the licensee commission the first fully commercial ACT plant at Brandon in Suffolk. This plant, still in operation, has the capacity to treat 30,000 tonnes of APCr per year.
2016

A second fully commercial plant is commissioned and there are now two in operation. A third plant planned. Global CO₂ Initiative states Carbon8 Systems is a world leader.
2017

Carbon8 Systems awarded the Queens Award for Enterprise – Innovation.
2018

Carbon creates the CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ, a containerised solution that enables direct waste CO₂ capture from flue gas, rather than pure, bottled CO₂ as used in the original plants operating under licence.
CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ successfully demonstrates direct CO₂ capture and waste treatment at a CRH Cement plant in Ontario. In this project, Carbon8 treats cement bypass dust and demonstrates the production of two products: low carbon aggregate for building materials and a high potassium fertiliser product.
2019

Successful installation of CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ at Hanson in the UK (part of Heidelberg Cement Group) funded by InnovateUK.
2020

First commercial CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ deployment with Vicat Group.
First CO₂ntainerᵀᴹ pilot at EfW plant with AVR.
2022

Carbon8 secures £5m investment led by EDF and Vicat to accelerate the deployment of its CCUS technology applied to industrial residues in heavy industry.
2023

Strategic Investors appoint experienced CEO to create and lead a reset and transformation of the business.
Completed stage relevance reset of the company and plan to create technology readiness breakthrough and commercial readiness for 2024.
2024

Carbon8 completes the in-market configuration and AI-driven automation of its technology platform. Creates a fully automated safe, easily integrated, reliable and efficient market-disruptive technology.
The company successfully commissioned and demonstrated client performance of its first full scale industrial system at a cement plant in France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Carbon8 completes the full sales cycle of its first sale of its system and generates an MOU for a further three system sales.
2025

The company completes its commercialisation plan to scale up sales and generate appeal and adoption in its target markets.
Carbon8 generates carbon credit methodology and processes for its carbon credits. Gets market approval by DNV and ICROA, and trades its first carbon credits on the voluntary market.
